The origin of the name roulette is derived from French, meaning small wheel.
Roulette history starts in the 17th century, when the roulette wheel was invented by French mathematician Blaise Pascal.
Some think that an earlier version of roulette originates from China, and that roulette history came into existence, when the game was brought through the spice trade routes.
The 0 number was added to roulette history only in 1842, by Frenchman Louis Blanc.

The roulette game was banned in France, and then was brought by Blanc to Germany, where it was played in gambling halls. Later the game was also banned in Germany, and Blanc needed to find an alternate place for his game. Blanc opened a casino in Monaco, and this casino was the only casino in Europe offering roulette, until the 1930.
According to legend that appears in roulette history books, Blanc bargained with the devil in order to get the secrets of the roulette game. This legend is supported by the fact that if you add the numbers that appear on the roulette wheel, 1 to 36, you get “666″, which is the sign for the devil.
The 00 number was added to the roulette rules and wheel after in arrived in America in 1800. The American version of roulette played in the US never reached the same popularity as the game had in Europe.
